Z marks 50th birthday by restoring back catalogue to Spotify

Jay-Z Turns 50 With a Return to Spotify

When music streaming started picking up steam in the middle of the decade, Jay-Z didn't want to be left behind. It was in 2017 when the hip-hop star was making a big push to boost his own music streaming platform, Tidal. You also had no worries if you're from the old days of physical copies and uploaded the files to your computer (what a time).

At midnight on the rapper's 50th birthday, he celebrated by returning his entire catalogue to the library of Spotify, and now we can all remember just how god damn good 4:44 was.

"Happy Birthday, Hov", Spotify tweeted on Wednesday, using a nickname of the rapper born Shawn Carter, who grew up in one of Brooklyn's most notorious housing projects. His work was taken off of both Apple and Spotify in April 2017 but quickly made a comeback on Apple Music.

Jay-Z has over 8.4 million monthly listeners per his Spotify page, which will gain a considerable boost in the short term. He previously removed most of his catalogue when he launched Tidal, with the exception of his 1996 debut Reasonable Doubt, 1997's In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, Vol. 2... It's a mystery as to how this was all arranged to make this happen. Then, earlier this year, Hov's Blueprint albums were uploaded to Apple Music.
