Leon Draisaitl scores twice, leads Oilers over Canucks 3-2

Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports GDB Game Notes Vancouver Canucks @ Edmonton Oilers

Leon Draisaitl scored two power play goals as the Edmonton Oilers downed the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 Sunday night.

"It's obviously not a good match, not a good win, but no one will wonder how we won this game at the end of the day", said Draisaitl. "The two games back to back should be fun for us".

LAST 10 GAMES: Canucks: 3-6-1, averaging 2.8 goals, 4.7 assists, 3.4 penalties and 7.1 penalty minutes while giving up 3.6 goals per game with a.893 save percentage.

Loui Eriksson was in the penalty box for both of Draisaitl's goals. They are the first Oilers teammates with 50 points prior to the 30-game mark since Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri in the 1984-85 season. "No one really said anything - we all knew the job that had to be done".

"You give up five you can't win in this league". If you give them enough opportunities, they are going to capitalize on it. "I thought we played well (but) they got two power-play goals there and that was the difference".

Goaltender Jacob Markstrom, making his first back-to-back start of the season, stopped 26 shots for Vancouver. The Edmonton Oilers are on the road as they face the Vancouver Canucks Sunday night. 6, Vancouver, Eriksson 1 (Horvat, Pearson), 18:04. However, he left the game in the second period after blocking a shot.

Late in the first minute, Patrick Russell thought he had scored his first career goal when he scored a rebound. Draisaitl set up shop near the right faceoff dot and one-timed the pass from McDavid for his 17th of the season. Gaudette extended the lead to 6-3 with his second of the game and sixth of the year at 3:06 off an assist from Tanner Pearson before the roof fell in. On Thursday, head coach Dave Tippett said he expects Nugent-Hopkins to return to the lineup next week. "They thwacked us here and we get a chance to get back at it". Then came the third period when things went sideways for Vancouver. "Connor really had his legs tonight". There's the puck pursuit, the puck handling, the tips, the screens, the team-leading 12 goals and the frankness of an old-hockey soul.

Eriksson, always a lightning-rod for displeasure in Canuck Nation, carelessly let his stick ride up on Darnell Nurse's shoulder in the neutral zone during an icing and was called for high-sticking at 13:24 of the middle period.

J.T. Miller was workhorse on Vancouver's tying goal at 15:34. Brock Boeser replied for the Canucks, finishing off a short passing play with Quinn Hughes and J.T. Miller. However, the Canucks successfully challenged goalkeeper involvement and the goal was taken off the board.

Game notes The teams played 8:47 from the opening puck drop to the game's first whistle. Defenseman Oscar Fantenberg dressed for his first game as a Canuck. However, Edmonton's power play is still operating at a league-best 32% and it's hard to imagine the Oilers will keep getting that kind of production on the man-advantage.
