Google Photos adds a chat feature to make image sharing faster

Messenger

The new feature will let you share an image or multiple images via the Google Photos app.

Is this a good idea as another Google messaging service?

The recipient will need a Google account to receive the photos, however, because they'll need to sign-in to view the conversation. Previously, users could only share photos within the Google Photos app by creating a shared album. Then choose the contact to share the content with and you're done. That may limit the feature to some extent, as not everyone is a Google user.

Google Cloud Platform offers hundreds of cloud-based features and tools, but before you can access a single one, you have to create a project. Be that as it may, though, Google is also proactively pointing out that while this new feature provides an easy way to like photos or comment within your conversation (and you can also save these photos or videos to your own gallery), "This feature isn't created to replace the chat apps you already use, but we do hope it improves sharing memories with your friends and family in Google Photos". Well, we know the history there with Google and messaging services, but I can't say I hate this. So, you can expect people to start crying that Google has created a new messaging platform, but we don't think that's what it is.

It's worth noting that Google Photos doesn't isn't trying to become an "all-in-one" app (like Instagram does). Instead, Google notes that this feature wants to relocate sharing to Google Photos rather than using other apps for it. However, it's still being rolled out.

The feature itself is simple to use.

The new chat feature will be joining Google's existing live albums, shared libraries, and shared albums features that already make sharing photos on Google Photos a breeze.

You'll see this and a cleaner-looking Sharing tab on Android, iOS, and the web starting this week.
