Apple celebrates the best apps and games of 2019

The App Store

Apple's pick for the iPhone's App of the Year is Spectre Camera, the long-exposure camera app from Lux Optics, which we reviewed in February when it was released. "We are excited to announce such a diverse group of 2019 App Store winners, showing that great design and creativity comes from developers large and small, and from every corner of the world".

On the iPad, Flow by Moleskine won the best app of the year, offering an "elegant digital notebook" experience for iPad owners.

iPhone: Sky: Children of the Light - A flight-based, lightly-cooperative adventure game featuring atmospheric and whimsical art direction in a similar vein to developer thatgamecompany's previous critically acclaimed title, "Journey".

The latter had its own reason to celebrate elsewhere, with Nintendo's free-to-play racer topping the charts as the most downloaded free game of the year to date.

Apple also took a second stab at choosing a games "trend" of the year. These include selections for best app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV, as well as top picks in books and podcasts. And, Sayonara Wild Hearts took the title of Apple Arcade game of the year.

"The 2019 App Store Best Apps and Games winners reflect our global desire for connection, creativity and fun", said Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

Like a year ago, Apple's App Store editorial team highlighted two App Store trends too. For instance, in gaming, it was all about reimagining blockbusters. Apps such as Anchor, Canva, Spark Camera, and Wattpad.

Examples cited included Call of Duty Mobile, The Elder Scrolls: Blades, Gears Pop, Minecraft Earth, Dr Mario World and Mario Kart Tour.
