Alberta students best in Canada at reading, science, global test results show

Students in 4 Chinese regions topped the Oecd rankings in reading mathematics and science

The country's average scores in all three subject areas fell slightly, continuing a slide that has been going on for more than a decade in the OECD's prestigious Programme for International Student Assessment.

Despite a decade of the Common Core State Standards, an Obama-era progressive education reform that was touted as one that would improve students' critical thinking and eliminate the achievement gap between white and minority students, us public schools appear to be failing in both areas.

The assessment focuses on proficiency in reading, mathematics, science as well as on students' well-being.

About 73% of female students stated reading as a hobby compared with 52% for boys, he said. In sciences, Thai students scored 426 points, much worse than the worldwide average of 489. The ranking of US students improved only because the scores of students in other countries dropped. Alberta students scored second highest among Canadian provinces in math, behind only Quebec.

In science, New Zealand's score was the 12th highest, just ahead of Slovenia and the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. It was followed by Singapore.

Singapore and four regions in China were ranked as the top education systems in the tests, which were taken in 2018-19 by about 600,000 students in 79 countries and regions.

For instance, according to the OECD only about 20% of 15-year-olds who took part in Pisa said they read magazines several times a month, compared with about 60% in 2009.

Northern Ireland pupils received an average score of 501 in reading, compared with the mean reading score across all OECD countries of 487.

While the trend of the results was either stagnant or downward, the OECD in its PISA 2018 country note for Indonesia said that "these results must be seen in the context of the vast strides that Indonesia has made in increasing enrolment".

"If our kids can't read, write and do maths and science, then we've failed", she added.

Though the ranking of USA students improved among those of other countries, scores were statistically unchanged compared to those from 2015, when the assessment was last conducted. The number of students who skipped school in the two weeks before the test also increased, to 29 per cent.

Craig says the ministry was anxious about the long-term decline in the PISA results.

"Results from PISA indicate the quality and equity of learning outcomes attained around the world, and allow educators and policy makers to learn from the policies and practices applied in other countries", said OECD.

"After six years of failing our schoolkids, the Liberals must say how they'll fix this serious problem". "We should not accept anything less", he said.
