We're Not Trying To Do 'Truth To Power — Netflix CEO

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings Weighs In On Streaming Rivals, ‘Patriot Act’ Edits, Movie Theater Windows, And More

"We're not in the truth to power business, we're in the entertainment business", Hastings said, according to a tweet from NBC's Dylan Byers. "Quite outrageous that Netflix has pulled one of his episodes critical of Saudi Arabia".

When Sorkin pushed Hastings on the fact that Netflix is now complicit in censoring critics in the Middle East, Hastings again trotted out the argument that Netflix is merely an entertainment channel rather than a new channel. Cost-free-speech purists would like corporations to do far more to combat censorship in repressive countries like Saudi Arabia.

"We're not in the news business", Hastings said, as reported by Variety and The Hill.

"It's tough. If you want to be a news brand, then you have a different set of things that you do", Hastings said.

Earlier this year, Netflix faced criticism from human rights groups for pulling an episode in Saudi Arabia of comedian Hasan Minhaj's Patriot Act series that criticized the kingdom's powerful crown prince. "We're an entertainment brand". PEN America, the literary and human rights organization, said the move "legitimizes repression". The CIA reportedly concluded past year that the crown prince ordered the assassination of Khashoggi, but he's denied it.

He also said it was unlikely Netflix would threaten the business of movie theaters, and defended a recent experiment under which users can watch videos sped up 50%.

Hastings went on to say that if the Saudi government asked him to take down gay content, he wouldn't do it, but he again seemed to believe there was some bright line distinction between fictionalised drama and hard news critique-something that Hassan Minaj apparently stepped over with his show about Saudi investment in Silicon Valley. Netflix complied by removing the episode.

Netflix agreed to pull the episode after receiving a letter from the Saudi government claiming that the episode violated the country's anti-cybercrime law.

Minhaj, a former correspondent with The Daily Show on Comedy Central, told The Associated Press this summer that his Netflix show would fuse his personal narrative as a first-generation Indian-American with the current political and social backdrop to examine deep issues confronting the world. And Saudi censorship boosted Minhaj's profile in the United States.
