Waiters had seizure on team plane after overdosing on 'gummies'

Goran Dragic Erik Spoelstra Dion Waiters Heat

The Miami Heat have declined to comment on a reported medical episode that impacted Dion Waiters on a team flight out of Denver overnight on Thursday.

On Friday (November 8), reports came over the wire that a Miami Heat player suffered a medical emergency on the plane en route to the team's game against the Los Angeles Lakers after playing the Phoenix Suns on Thursday.

Waiters flew back to Miami with the Heat on Saturday.

THC/marijuana is a banned substance by the National Basketball Association - even if it is legal in Colorado (where the Heat had recently been on their road trip) and California (where the plane landed). He's missed a total of nine games this year following a suspension.

Because of the timing of the issue on the team plane, several teammates said Friday night they were unclear about the specific nature of the incident, with one expressing concern for Waiters. He's additionally been suspended by the team for conduct detrimental to the team.

Beyond that, there are just questions, ones the Heat have yet to address.

Slater later reported that Waiters overdosed on "gummies", passed out, and had a seizure when he woke up.

Local 10 sports has learned that Waiters did return to South Florida with the team and is said to be doing OK.

The Heat declined to comment.

Waiters has had a tough month battling his way back to game shape after the Heat concluded that he hadn't met their conditioning requirements for playing time in the regular season.

Waiters faces missing out on a $1.2 million contract bonus if he misses four more games this season.

The buzz around the league is the Heat are trying to trade Waiters, but the two-years, $24.8 million still on his contract may make that hard.
