UK streaming service BritBox launches with Channel 4 deal

Netflix-challenger Britbox launches in the Blighty- if you can find

BritBox, a joint venture subscription streaming service between the BBC and ITV, will eventually feature content from all the major United Kingdom public service broadcasters after signing up Channel 4 for three years.

Netflix prices range from £5.99 for its basic service to £8.99 for its standard plan.

BritBox, the new paid streaming service from the BBC and ITV, has launched in the UK. "The opportunity to collaborate as [public-service broadcasters] on BritBox extends our track record of partnership and will ensure there is a compelling single destination for the very best high-quality, homegrown content".

In addition a wider deal with BT, which owns EE, will see Britbox made available to the millions of customers who subscribe to its pay-TV service, which broadcasts programming such as Champions League football.

"The new battleground quite often in streaming are shows like Friends, which are over 20 years old", she said. It is said that these will be added from Boxing Day, 26 December.

Apple launched its service, Apple TV+, with big budget fare such as flagship The Morning Show starring A-listers Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carrell, in 100 countries on 1 November.

The exec admitted that uniting the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 has been "no mean feat", telling the programme that "We've had to work really, really hard to pull the PSBs together".

BritBox has partnered with BT on products that feature access to BritBox and with EE as its mobile partner. Samsung's will be the first smart TVs with a built-in BritBox app. Support for Freeview Play, YouView and sets from other manufacturers will come in 2020.

With an interface mimicking that of Netflix's, content is neatly organised in collections such as "Watching the detectives", "Thrill me: TV's best thrillers" or "Made in Yorkshire", with all content distinctly and recognisably British.

The platform is being billed as "the biggest collection of British box sets available in one place".

BBC exclusives will include Les Miserables and The Split.

BritBox originally launched back in the United States in 2017 providing access to programmes like Midsomer Murders, Poirot and Only Fools and Horse to a U.S. audience ($6.99pcm).

However, many BBC shows are missing because they are licenced to rival broadcasters.
