UK: Former speaker Bercow sticks to his views on Trump

Where John Bercow stands in the list of longest-serving Speakers

"I don't think it helps the UK".

During his 10-year tenure as Speaker, Mr Bercow has been accused of having an anti-Brexit bias; an accusation he vehemently denies.

When asked whether the Brexit is beneficial to the UK's global status, Mr. Berkov said to the event: "The honest answer is no".

John Bercow, the former British House of Commons speaker, says Brexit is a historic mistake and the country should not be bound by the close 2016 vote to leave the European Union.

He added: "I think that Brexit is the biggest foreign policy mistake in the post-war period, and that is my honest view".

Addressing a gathering of the Foreign Press Association in London yesterday, Mr Bercow said while he was impartial in chairing proceedings in the chamber, he could now express an opinion.

Mr Bercow also faced calls to quit a year ago over his alleged partisan behaviour when a "Bollocks to Brexit" sticker was spotted on his auto - although he claimed the vehicle belonged to his wife Sally. I respect Boris Johnson but Brexit doesn't help us.

Mr Bercow's successor as Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, was elected to the position this week, and began his time in the chair by promising to end the "bear pit" atmosphere of confrontation in the House of Commons.

He said: "I think my style will be about trying to get business through the House in the best possible way but making sure that backbenchers are heard and they are going to hold the executive to account", he said.

"Fair to the Brexiteers, to whom I granted urgent questions and emergency debates before the word "Brexiteer" had even been invented".

Mr. Bercow announced that he intends to step down in September.

Hoyle took 325 of the 540 votes in a runoff with Labour colleague Chris Bryant after the seven-member field was winnowed down in three previous voting rounds.
