Trump says forthcoming vape policy may raise age requirement to 21

Juul halts sales of mint e-cigarettes in response to ‘new research’

The U.S. Health and Human Services announced on September 11 that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would finalize a policy in the coming weeks that would clear the market of unauthorized, non-tobacco-flavored e-cigarette products.

"These results are unacceptable", K.C. Crosthwaite, CEO of Juul Labs, said in a statement. Federal health officials are expected to soon release plans for removing most vaping flavours from the market.

Juul announced last month that it would stop the sale of flavors other than tobacco, mint and menthol. It has also stopped advertising in the United States.

"These products are still getting to kids and we can not let a whole generation get addicted to them through mint and menthol and other flavors", Azar said when the ban was initially proposed in September.

Pro-vaping groups often argue that flavors are an important tool to help adult smokers quit using combustible cigarettes.

When asked on Friday if the administration was stepping back from restricting flavors, Trump said, "We're talking about the age, we're talking about flavors, we're also talking about keeping people working". Experts say allowing menthol to remain on the e-cigarette market could still leave a crack in the door to addiction for youth users, since menthol isn't markedly different from mint.

Representatives for those groups immediately criticized Juul for not also pulling its menthol flavor.

The action follows the release of a new study showing that mint flavors appeal to teenagers. The study found that mint was the most popular flavor among Juul users in 10th and 12th grades and the second-most popular among middle-schoolers.

For a separate study published Tuesday in JAMA, researchers from the University of Southern California-Los Angeles examined data from the federal Monitoring the Future survey to estimate how frequently adolescents used Juul's flavored e-cigarettes. Juul is the best-selling e-cigarette brand in the USA, but has been besieged by legal troubles, including multiple investigations by Congress, federal agencies and several state attorneys general.

The popular e-cigarette company is constantly facing backlash for its unsafe nicotine products.
