The captain becomes a player as Tiger Woods picks himself

Tiger Woods

The Internationals will field six debutants at next month's Presidents Cup, with Ernie Els naming rookies Im Sung-jae and Joaquin Niemann among his captain's picks to take on the United States at Royal Melbourne.

Global captain Ernie Els filled out his team Wednesday, adding two rookies (Sungjae Im and Joaquin Niemann) to a team that already had four Presidents Cup newcomers.

Finau and Woodland received Captain's picks from Woods. Just $25/month, no lock-in contract.

Woods also selected Tony Finau, who finished just outside the top eight who qualified; U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland, who is playing on his first U.S. team; and Patrick Reed.

Woods tied Sam Snead's all-time Tour record with his first victory since undergoing knee surgery in August in his latest successful return from injury.

But International skipper Els yesterday questioned whether the presence of Woods on the fairways would unsettle the Americans.

"I honestly had no idea which way he was going to go", Hadwin said.

"Technically we can change a player right up until the Wednesday (before the tournament starts). but all I've said to Brooks is focus on your rehab and when you get around to playing golf, let me know", Woods said.

"He's in good form, he's Masters champion, he's won recently and he's played in so many matches. They will have to deal with it ... and it will be interesting how the team copes with Tiger playing".

The Presidents Cup, a match play event modelled on the Ryder Cup that pits a non-European International team against the Americans, will be held December 12-15 at Royal Melbourne.

Day will join three other Australians - Adam Scott, Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith.

"This is our generation's best player by quite a distance and people want to see him play".

Day has dropped to world No.27 after a winless year and has a poor Presidents Cup record of five wins and 11 losses.

"It was very hard for me, but I needed guys in solid form", said Els, speaking from Beijing. "Jason has performed under pressure for a long time".

Here's Tiger breaking down his Tiger pick by talking about himself in the third person.

Everyone is required to play in at least one match ahead of the Sunday singles, meaning Woods only has to play twice.

The rest of the USA team is Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas, Matt Kuchar, Patrick Cantlay and Webb Simpson.
