Mike Pompeo Calls Iran's Treatment Of Nuke Inspector "Outrageous"

International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors and Iranian technicians at a nuclear power plant of Natanz

Kamalvandi said that "legally speaking" the Iranian government had done nothing wrong in blocking the female inspector from its facility.

In response, Tehran gave the nuclear deal's remaining signatories another two months to circumvent USA sanctions, which have curbed Iranian oil sales by some 80%. Three non-signatories - Israel, India and Pakistan - have nuclear weapons.

He said that inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will visit Iran on Sunday in a bid to take samples and and officially announce Iran's starting uranium enrichment and its degree.

Iran started to cut its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal in a retaliatory move following the U.S.' unilateral decision to withdraw from the agreement between Tehran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany and the EU.

The deal obliged Iran to eliminate its stockpile of medium-enriched uranium and drastically reduce its stockpile of low-enriched uranium.

In its fourth step away from the agreement, Iran resumed enrichment at the Fordo plant south of Tehran on Thursday, with engineers feeding uranium hexafluoride gas (UF6) into the plant's mothballed enrichment centrifuges.

Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the JCPOA after the USA withdrawal, but the three European Union parties to the deal (France, Britain, and Germany) have failed to ensure Iran's economic interests.

"The agency does not agree with Iran's characterisation of the situation involving the inspector", an IAEA spokesman said in a statement.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday slammed Tehran's treatment of an inspector with the UN's nuclear watchdog agency last week as "an outrageous and unwarranted act of intimidation".

Under a 2015 deal between Iran and major powers that has been undermined by Washington's withdrawal past year, its nuclear facilities are subject to continuous monitoring by the IAEA.
