Martin Scorsese says Marvel movies lack 'genuine emotional danger'

Martin Scorsese Considered Making ‘Joker’ for Four Years but Couldn’t Crack Comic Book Story

In a recent interview with the BBC (via IndieWire), Scorsese finally took a break from trying to explain his opinions about Marvel to discuss why he stepped away from Joker. Films today, according to Scorsese, have everything in them "officially sanctioned because it can't really be any other way". While his MCU movies not being considered as cinema statement giving way to a whirlwind of controversy, Hollywood seemed to be divided into different groups with their own perspective over the hot topic.

"I do know that if I have been youthful, if I might come of age at a later time, I may need been excited by these footage and possibly even needed to make one myself". My producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff produced it. I thought about it a lot over the last four years.

Martin Scorsese is not letting this Marvel thing go.

I do not know anything about that.

"It was personal reasons why I didn't get involved, but I know the script very well". It has a real energy and Joaquin.

"For me, ultimately, I don't know if I make the next step into this character developing into a comic book character", continued Scorsese. You have remarkable work. He (Joker) develops into an abstraction. For anyone who dreams of making movies or who is just starting out, the situation at this moment is brutal and inhospitable to art. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks.

Scorsese took the case of the commoditisation of cinema by the hands of massive studios like Marvel, saying their movies have been "sequels in identify however they're remakes in spirit".

Despite his praises for "Joker", he stated that superhero films are still in a different category.

In summation, Scorsese says the movies deficiency "revelation, secret or legitimate emotional threat".

Scorsese has some experience with this phenomenon; as he notes in the piece, his latest film, The Irishman, is playing in a very limited number of theaters for just a few weeks before being released via Netflix on November 27. In fact, there wasn't even a studio that wanted to produce the film until Netflix eventually agreed.

Phoenix, though, is adamant that Joker's box office - which is nearing a billion dollars, the highest of any R-Rated movie in history - won't tempt him back for an encore. (It's playing in those theaters now.) Paramount was set to distribute the film before dropping it over budgetary concerns.
