Killed In Bushfires, Australia Braces For "Catastrophic" Conditions

Australian firefighters warned they were in

"It used to be God's country, but it ain't any more", said another neighbour, 72-year-old Dave Scott.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison warned Australians to expect more bad news from the fire zones.

"Climate change is real, can't you see", the Australian newspaper reported a man as yelling before he was escorted out of the building.

Asked by reporters about the links between climate change and the unprecedented bushfire emergency, the prime minister refused to respond.

Labor leader Anthony Albanese was asked about climate change links earlier on Sunday.

"We've got a return to some worse conditions as we head into early next week, particularly Tuesday and Wednesday", Fitzsimmons said. "'We're on fire! There's fire everywhere!'"

Greens leader Richard Di Natale backed Mr Bandt's comments on Sunday, adding that every politician who had opposed climate action "bears responsibility" for the fires.

But fire authorities said that falling temperatures, increases in humidity and helicopter assistance were helping with efforts to tackle the blazes.

Although the number of emergency warning level fires decreased from 17 Friday to one Saturday, the weather outlook remains grim. Cash payment would include 1,000 Australian dollars ($685) for eligible adults and 400 Australian dollars ($273) for eligible children, it said.

The fires still raging near Port Macquarie and Forster are continuing to be a serious threat to lives and homes, while three other serious fires have thankfully been downgraded to Watch and Act.

Officials also said more than 150 homes have been destroyed.

NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons on Friday said there were preliminary reports of minor injuries to both firefighters and members of the general public.

"A number of our own fire stations have been destroyed".

Fletcher had messaged a neighbor that she had made a decision to abandon her house to the flames, which witnesses in the area said had became a wall 20 feet (6 meters) high that emitted smoke so thick it blotted out the sun.

"The more forensic process of getting in and doing the detailed assessments will come over coming days".

Three people were confirmed dead on Saturday evening.

Wytaliba residents Vivian Chaplain, 69, and George Nole were also named as victims.

Five people were listed by authorities as missing on Saturday afternoon, but local media said on Sunday they had now been accounted for.

The body of a person was discovered in a vehicle at the Kangawalla fire, near Glen Innes, the Rural Fire Service said on Saturday morning.

Two firefighters were injured when a burnt tree fell onto a fire truck at Nambucca Heads on the mid-north coast on Sunday.
