Judge Rules Trump Must Pay $2 Million for Misusing Charity Foundation

Donald Trump fined $2m for misusing charity for political ends

The lawsuit from New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood alleges that Trump and his three oldest children ran the charitable organization in a way that flouted federal and state campaign finance laws during the 2016 campaign season, including allowing the Trump campaign to organize a fundraising event for the foundation in Des Moines.

A NY judge on Thursday ordered President Trump to pay a $2 million settlement to a number of nonprofits in a civil case alleging the Trump Foundation committed "persistent" violations of the laws governing charitable organizations, according to a court filing. James had sought the entire $2.82 million, but the judge determined that $2 million was sufficient because the money raised eventually reached veterans' charities. "The settlements also include mandatory training requirements for Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, and Eric Trump". He has been ordered to pay $2 million in damages by a NY judge.

President Trump has come under scrutiny about his charitable foundation's use of funds. Trump had said that the funds raised would be distributed to charities.

"The sole remaining issue-which the parties agreed would be determined by me-is the amount of any additional payment owed by Mr. Trump arising out of the allegedly improper use of the Foundation and distribution of the Funds received by the Foundation from Mr. Trump's Fundraiser".

It continued: "Unfortunately, that donation was delayed due to the Attorney General's politically motivated lawsuit".

"Mr. Trump repeatedly used Foundation money for his own personal, business, and political interests, including the unlawful coordination with his 2016 presidential campaign", said Attorney General Letitia Jamesin a statement.

The Attorney General's office stated that the $2 million in damages and the remaining $1.78 million that the foundation has will go to Army Emergency Relief, the Children's Aid Society, Citymeals-on-Wheels, Give an Hour, Martha's Table, United Negro College Fund, United Way of National Capital Area, and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. But according to court documents, the Trump Foundation improperly used $2.82 million it received from that fundraiser.
