Japan specs ban for women at work sparks backlash

Japanese companies ban women from wearing glasses at work because they give a 'cold impression'

In social networks in Japan is gaining momentum a protest against the ban by the management to wear glasses to women.

Kumiko Nemoto, a professor of sociology at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies said these things are outdated.

She said: "The reasons why women are not supposed to wear glasses... really don't make sense". It's all about gender.

She added that the report reflects The idea of "ancient Japanese tradition". In March, the females voiced their disagreement with companies asking women to wear makeup at work.

"The emphasis on appearance is often on young women and wanting them to look feminine", Banri Yanagi, a 40-year-old sales associate at a life insurer in Tokyo, said in an interview.

This is not the only problem Japan is facing.

This is, however, not the first time the issue of women dress code has come under scrutiny in the country as most recently, the issue of women forced to wear high heels at workplace has also come under debate.

More than 21,000 people signed an online petition started by Japanese writer and actress Yumi Ishikawa earlier this year that called for a ban on compulsory high heels at work, in what has been known as the #KuToo movement.

After this decision, the controversy has been sparked over the decision and heated discussions have been made on a social media platforms.

The slogan plays on the Japanese words for shoes "kutsu" and pain "kutsuu".

Activists say that high heels must be worn when applying for a job.

In response, a Japanese minister said dress code expectations were "necessary and appropriate" in the workplace. "That's the message that these policies are sending, at least".
