Ajla Tomljanovic to open Fed Cup final in singles play

Ajla Tomljanovic will join Ash Barty as Australia’s singles representatives

"When you play a Fed Cup final with the number one in the world on the other side, and away, you can not say that you have an advantage", he said on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old, Croatian-born Tomljanovic only received clearance from the International Tennis Federation to represent her adopted country last month. "We're all here together, willing each other on as much as we can".

"I don't think anything out there or anything in the media, any particular headline, can really distract us from what we're trying to achieve this weekend".

Molik's decision was likely swayed by Tomjlanovic's impressive 2-0 record against Mladenovic, despite the Queenslander being yet to win a WTA title, one less than her opponent.

It will be Australia's first Fed Cup final since 1993.

Yet she has also proved to be a superb team player throughout the Fed Cup campaign and enters the decider unbeaten in nine singles rubbers dating back to 2017. "It's going to be a tough and exciting match". Australia last won the event, previously known as the Federation Cup, in Italy in 1974, with Evonne Goolagong, Dianne Fromholtz and Janet Young defeating the United States 2-1.

Barty's 2018 has been a season of individual triumphs, highlighted by her maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open and her WTA Finals win in Shenzhen on Sunday.

If things go according to plan, Barty and Mladenovic will face off in Sunday's first reverse singles rubber and could possibly take on each other again in doubles with Mladenovic partnering Caroline Garcia and Barty partnering Samantha Stosur.

Each equally Barty, who gained final weekend's WTA Finals in China, and Stosur and Mladenovic/Garcia acquired a few-established dwell fifth doubles matches in April's semifinals to ship their global locations to the last word.

French Open champion Barty and former US Open victor Stosur played all the singles and doubles in their semi-final win over Belarus, but Stosur said captain Alicia Molik had yet to indicate if the same tactic would be deployed. Australia will host France in Perth, with matches starting on Saturday.

Simply previous to Friday's entice, Australia workers captain Alicia Molik selected No. 51-ranked Tomljanovic above Stosur as Australia's 2nd singles participant driving Barty. Stosur won the 2011 U.S. Open and was once ranked No. 4 in singles, but has fallen to No. 96 and often doesn't play well before home crowds.

Seven-time champions Australia have not tasted success in the tournament since 1974, while France are aiming for a third crown and first since 2003.
