Xi given warm welcome in India

Dressed in a black tracksuit, PM Narendra Modi "plogged" his way along the scenic coast as the sun rose a day after an informal summit with Chinese Premier Xi Jinping.

The meeting at the magnificent Shore temple complex under a sea-facing colourful tent went beyond the scheduled time as both leader touched upon a range of issues over sumptuous local delicacies.

India has made considerable effort to ease travel and visa procedures for Chinese tourists, and the country is expecting more Chinese travelers, he said.

China was irked by India's August move to split Jammu and Kashmir in two because it will make the state's Ladakh region - part of which is claimed by Beijing - a separate Indian administrative territory.

Chinese ambassador to India Sun Weidong was quoted as saying by news reports that a "new set of consensus" including "guiding principles" on giving a new direction to the bilateral ties were expected after this weekend's summit.

The issue of trade deficit and trade imbalance was also discussed, the foreign secretary said.

"The free flowing nature of the Informal summit at the UNESCO World Heritage site will continue and deepen contacts at the highest level and guide the future trajectory of India-China relationship", said Raveesh Kumar, Foreign Ministry spokesperson, who was also present during the briefing.

However, the following year Mr Xi and Mr Modi patched things up in China's Wuhan. Tamil Nadu, a maritime transit hub for cargoes in the ancient Silk Road, has a long history of exchanges with China and close connections with China on maritime trade since ancient times, Xi said.

Mahabalipuram - home to historical monuments that pay testament to India and China's ancient ties - has seen more than 40 Tibetans, including a prominent activist, reportedly detained ahead of the summit.

India and China are both members of the RCEP along with 10 ASEAN nations - Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam - and their trade partners - Australia, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.

Gokhale said both countries are diverse and radicalization is a matter of concern that should not impact the society.

It is "a dialogue, a conversation in progress", that would resume on Saturday morning between the two sides, he said.

Part of Beijing's Belt and Road infrastructure mega-programme is planned in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and Xi held talks with Prime Minister Imran Khan in Beijing just two days before meeting Modi. The comments evoked sharp reaction from New Delhi.

Narendra Modi has reiterated that differences should not escalate into disputes between India and China, adding that the two Asian giants have so far successfully implemented a vision adopted during the Wuhan Informal Summit.

"I look forward to further discussions, I may follow up on proposals discussed yesterday", he said, without elaborating.
