UK Sees Brexit Deal as Almost Impossible as EU Lashes Out

GBP USD

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday that his Brexit plan was doomed to fail without further compromise on the Irish border issue, a Downing Street source said.

Merkel says for a deal to be agreed upon, Northern Ireland would have to stay in the EU customs union forever, which Johnson is not prepared to agree to.

The U.K.is set to leave the European Union on October 31, but legislation recently passed by Britain's Parliament requires Prime Minister Johnson to ask Brussels for an extension if the House of Commons doesn't endorse a deal or consent to a no-deal Brexit by October 19.

In a sign that Johnson's last-ditch proposals to bridge the Brexit impasse have failed, a Downing Street source said Merkel and Johnson had had a frank exchange on Tuesday morning and she had made clear that a deal was "overwhelmingly unlikely".

The row comes after European Union leaders made clear that Mr Johnson's plan to resolve issue of the Northern Ireland backstop was not a basis for an agreement.

The EU and the United Kingdom have agreed there must be no checks or infrastructure along that border, yet Britain wants to leave the EU's customs union so it can strike new trade deals around the world, making some sort of checks on goods crossing that border all but inevitable.

A No 10 source has said a Brexit deal is "essentially impossible" after a call between the PM and Angela Merkel.

Last month, they passed a law requiring the government to postpone Brexit rather than leave without a deal on the scheduled October 31 departure date.

Earlier an anonymous No 10 source had briefed broadcast journalists suggesting German chanceller Angela Merkel has rejected the United Kingdom government's new proposals for an all-Ireland regulatory zone.

On Tuesday night, Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar spoke to Mr Johnson on the phone for 45 minutes, and told broadcaster RTE it would be "very difficult" to reach an agreement before the end of the month.

UK ELECTION The opposition Labour Party said Johnson was trying to apportion blame ahead of a no-deal Brexit.

European Council President Donald Tusk expressed this assumption in a Twitter rant aimed directly at Boris Johnson.

After the call, Arlene Foster, leader of Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, which supports Johnson's Brexit stance, said accepting that position would be "surrender".

The U.K. Parliament is set to be suspended later Tuesday so that a new session can begin next week with a major policy speech from Johnson's Conservative government.

European leaders have all but officially rejected the prime minister's revised withdrawal deal.

"Both sides strongly reiterated their desire to reach a Brexit deal", the spokesman said.

"And under no circumstances will we accept that the European Union wants to do harm to the Good Friday Agreement".

The poster followed remarks the day earlier than this present day by a Downing Road offer who mentioned a Brexit deal changed into once "in actuality no longer most likely" on account of Ms Merkel's demands.

A Brexit deal is the obvious answer but getting close to 0% probability, however a Brexit extension would see a lift in the GBP against FX counterparts.

One supply in Johnson's workplace instructed The Spectator journal the federal government will attempt to "do all sorts of things" to forestall one other Brexit delay ought to negotiations actually collapse.
