Trump campaign: We won fight over Minneapolis rally

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey who is Jewish told reporters after his budget address Thursday Aug. 15 2019 in Minneapolis that Israel should not ban Rep. Ilhan Omar D-Minn. from visiting that country. Israel said Thursday that it will bar Omar and Rep

The Trump 2020 campaign accused the Democratic mayor of Minneapolis of an "outrageous abuse of power" over a $530,000 bill for security costs associated with a rally due to be held on Wednesday at the city's 20,000-capacity Target Center. According to the campaign, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is "attempting to extort President Trump's re-election campaign by conjuring up a phony and outlandish bill for security".

"The Trump campaign informed the Target Center that the U.S. Secret Service is exclusively responsible for coordinating security and that withholding the use of the arena would be viewed as a breach of contract and result in court action", the campaign said in a statement.

Later Tuesday, the Trump campaign said in a statement that the operators of Target Center had backed off cancelling the contract, with no agreement by the campaign to pay additional money.

"Additionally, the ridiculous sum of $530,000 is more than 26 times the estimated security costs for a 2009 Target Center health care rally held by President Barack Obama", the campaign added.

Frey was not pleased with the news that Trump was planning a rally, saying that the president was not welcome.

Many cities have sent invoices to the Trump campaign after his rallies are over, asking for reimbursement for tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses for such things as staff overtime, traffic control, and extra law enforcement.

"The Campaign can not be in breach of an obligation it does not owe to AEG", the campaign's lawyers argue in the letter. Trump himself piled on the next morning, retweeting his campaign manager and calling Frey a "lightweight mayor" who "is hurting the great police and other wonderful supporters".

Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale called Mayor Frey a "radical left-wing nutjob that is limiting free speech", over the matter.

Earlier in the day Trump tweeted that 72,000 people had already asked for free tickets to the Thursday rally. Dump Frey and (Rep. Ilhan) Omar!

The campaign said they will take legal action if AEG does not honor their contract by late Tuesday morning.

The Trump campaign has a history of not immediately paying charges billed by cities after rallies. Kroll told Fox News that "Cops for Trump" shirts that were made up in response are selling out. Mass presidential events in Minneapolis have also been much cheaper in the past.
