Toyota unveils revamped hydrogen sedan to take on Tesla

2021 Toyota Mirai Breaks The Mold With Stunning New Looks

The new Toyota Mirai doesn't look to change that. There will also be some changes in technology.

Pushing the boundaries of hydrogen's clean mobility potential with a driving range extended by up to 30%.

The new Mirai is a complete departure.

The Mirai's chief engineer, Yoshikazu Tanaka says that the new Mirai is meant to be a auto that customers feel like driving all the time, "a vehicle that has emotional and design appeal, as well as dynamic and responsive driving performance that can bring a smile to the faces of drivers". "We wanted something that's fun to drive", added Tanaka.

At its core, the Mirai is an electric vehicle, but it never needs to be plugged in to recharge. When hydrogen and oxygen combine to create electricity, the byproduct is water.

Toyota is working to develop a line of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and includes FCEVs in its electrification roadmap. Reckon this surprisingly swish new Mirai could convince you to go fuel-cell? Toyota claims increased body rigidity and a lower centre of gravity than the original Mirai. Toyota also promises a more powerful, engaging and even quieter driving experience.

Instead of being based on a front-wheel-drive platform and sharing a lot of exterior cues as the Prius like the current Mirai, the concept sits on a rear-wheel-drive platform and has a coupe-like silhouette that resembles something from Lexus.

Toyota has merely 10,000 of the Mirai, a fuel cell sedan it promoted as a game-changer at its launch five years ago. It also receives standard navigation and a banging JBL audio system with 14 speakers. Since 2012, fuel cell test vehicles have logged thousands of miles on North American roads.

Up until now, Toyota's technology flagship has packed some sexy sustainability credentials, with fully baked fuel-cell tech (asterisks to the infrastructure, which isn't yet fully baked).

The bigger size means bigger hydrogen storage tanks.

With an FCEV, however, the fuel is compressed hydrogen rather than gasoline. "The good news is that fuel cell technology is gaining momentum around the world", she said. Hydrogen can be produced locally and sustainably.

Despite things looking promising on paper, Toyota, which came up with one of the first commercial hydrogen fuel cell-powered sedans, has had a very niche market with its Mirai (which means "future" in Japanese). Once more stations open up, we're sure Toyota will expand Mirai sales to other states. With Australia being one of many countries where public hydrogen stations are non-existent, we don't expect to see it sold here for a long time - if at all. In addition to Japan, Europe and the USA, the Mirai will be sold in China, Australia and parts of the Middle East.
