Netflix misses mark on subscribers again as Disney and Apple loom

The company is projecting 7.6 million global net adds for the fourth quarter, compared to 8.8 million in the same quarter one year earlier. However, Netflix did pretty well in Q3 2018.

Streaming behemoth Netflix on Wednesday said it grew its subscribers by 6.8 million in the third quarter, allaying analyst concerns about a slowdown in growth as new rivals enter the market.

"We have been moving increasingly to original content both because of the anticipated pullback of second run content from some studios and because our original content is working in the form of member viewing and engagement", Netflix said. Earnings per share checked in at $1.47 versus $0.89 generated during the same period a year earlier.

Netflix believes it's in a good position to take on any newcomers, even those backed by Disney and AT&T. Our ambitious approach reflects our goal to satisfy the entertainment desires of our 158m-plus members and to attract as numerous hundreds of millions of non-members as we can.

Netflix said it was on track to achieve full-year operating margins of 13% and was targeting another 300 basis point expansion in 2020. This strategy has worked on two fronts.

Netflix has released originally produced local language shows in 17 countries and has plans to expand to 30, according to chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

This quarter is also a miss for Netflix, although just a couple hundred thousand from their initial 7 million new subs goal. For example, we wrote recently about Netflixs lowering its prices for a mobile-only version in India and Netflix giving free access to the pilot episode of Bard of Blood.

Once highly secretive, Netflix has started sharing data on its most popular original programs.

While strong revenue and earnings per share are encouraging, slowing subscriber growth is becoming a worrisome trend for Netflix as it fails to attract new users ahead of increased competition from Disney (DIS) and Apple (AAPL).

Netflix is not concerned about the arrival of Disney+ and HBO Max. "While the new competitors have some great titles (especially catalog titles), none have the variety, diversity, and quality of new original programming that we are producing around the world".

If Netflix is anxious about the armada of new streaming competitors coming its way, its executives didn't show it on Wednesday when the company reported its third-quarter earnings.

"There may be some modest headwind to our near-term growth, and we have tried to factor that into our guidance".
