Strike Pay for GM Workers Increased As Strike Continues

Nonetheless, according to General Motor's latest offer sent directly to the employees, the Detroit-based automaker had pledged to increase compensation through wages alongside one-time-payments and to preserve healthcare benefits without axing parts of worker's wages.

General Motors workers are getting a slight increase in strike pay as the work stoppage enters its fifth week.

It moves up the timing of a US$25 weekly raise that had been planned to go into effect on January 1. "$250 strike pay doesn't exactly allow for new clothing".

GM appealed directly to UAW employees in a blog post on Friday that laid out its latest offer aimed at ending the strike, drawing an angry response from the union that the automaker was trying to "starve ... workers off the picket lines". GM has confirmed that it has received the offer, and it is under review.

UAW members on the picket lines Monday said they are exhausted of the back and forth.

"UAW members and their families are sacrificing for all of us". The company would agree to make temporary workers permanent with three years of service and they would get a $3,000 bonus upon ratification of the contract. "They'll have to come to terms with reality and strike an accord".

According to press reports, the UAW also confirmed on Sunday that it will increase from US$250 to US$275 the weekly strike pay to nearly 50,000 workers who have taken action, and not received their salaries from General Motors since September 16.

The talks center on "how much of a commitment is GM willing to make to produce combustion-engine automobiles in the U.S. for the foreseeable future", said Masters.

On Friday, the 11th of October 2019, Detroit-based No. 1 USA automaker, General Motors Co. had exercised an unconventional approach by proffering its contract proposals directly to unionized employees in a bid to put an end to a month-long strike of 48,000 hourly workers.
