Slain reporter James Foley's mother hopes Islamic State pair face US charges

Trump Says U.S. Holds ‘Most Dangerous’ Islamic State Terrorists in Syria

The U.S. military is moving to take several dozen ISIS fighters into custody from Kurdish prisons in northeast Syria, and already holds two British fighters involved in the murder of freelance journalist James Foley and other Western hostages of the terror group, according to U.S. officials.

The New York Times reports that the United States is planning to take Mr Elsheikh and Mr Kotey to Virginia, where they will be tested.

They included two notorious British Islamic State fighters who were part of a four-man kidnap-and-torture cell known as "The Beatles", which beheaded captives, including foreign journalists and aid workers.

The roughly 40 individuals being taken into US custody, all considered important Islamic State figures, had been held in a constellation of small prisons in northeastern Syria run by Syrian Kurdish forces who have been the Pentagon's primary partner against the Islamic State in Syria.

Donald Trump said earlier on Wednesday the United States had transferred some Isis prisoners amid fears they could escape custody as Turkish troops invade north-eastern Syria.

Turkey launched airstrikes, fired artillery and began a ground offensive against Kurdish fighters in northern Syria on Wednesday after U.S. troops pulled back from the area.

"We have taken a certain number of ISIS fighters who are particularly bad and we've wanted to make sure nothing happened to them with respect to getting out", Trump said Wednesday. The London natives were taken to a USA -controlled military location, President Donald Trump said in a tweet.

Trump has shifted his position repeatedly on the detainees since Sunday night when he effectively gave the Turks the green light to invade the Kurdish-controlled part of Syria, suggesting initially that Turkey might have to take responsibility for them.

The group's frontman, Mohammed Emwazim - dubbed "Jihadi John" and the person who carried out the beheadings caught on video - was killed in a drone strike in 2015.

Kotey, left, and Elsheikh, read a news article about themselves during an interview with The Associated Press at a security center in Kobani, Syria in 2018.

The Kurds, who helped defeat the terror group in Syria and were key U.S. allies in that fight, guard thousands of IS fighters and their relatives in prisons and camps in areas under their control.

Numerous jails are near the border, although SDF sources denied reports that the prisons had been hit by Turkish shells.

Emwazi was killed in a USA air strike in 2015.

Britain revoked the citizenship final yr of each Kotey and Elsheikh - with them complaining that it made it unimaginable for them to get a good trial, with one in every of them saying the beheadings have been "regrettable".
