Kadri Gopalnath, noted saxophonist and Padma Shri awardee, passes away at 69

Legendary musician, the saxophone exponent Kadri Gopalnath passed away early morning today in a private hospital located in Mangalore.

Gopalnath was reportedly taken to AJ Hospital and Research Centre after complaining of back pain on 10 October. He was survived by his two sons and wife. Abdul Kalam in 2004 and is popularly known among Tamil film music lovers for playing saxophone for AR Rahman in the movie Duet. Kanyakumari, who has accompanied Kadri Gopalnath concerts for 30 years, said Gopalnath was a very good human being and was very spiritual.

Gopalnath was active in the music world in Chennai although he was a native of coastal Karnataka.

He used to be born on December 6, 1949 to Thaniappa and Gangamma in Bantwal taluk in Dakshina Kannada district. Gopalnath was drawn to the saxophone after listening to a recital within the Mysore palace band set and developed a ardour for it. Later, after his father moved out, he learnt Carnatic music from maestro N Gopalakrishna Iyer. He introduced his first live performance on the All India Radio in 1978. He had also won many honours including Kendra Sangeet Natak Academy award.

Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, inter alia, condoled the death of Gopalnath. "In his death the world of music has lost a great musician", Yediyurappa said in his message.

The funeral will probably be held on Saturday after Gopalnath's elder son Guruprasad who's working in Kuwait reaches right here. Gopalnath's body will be placed for display in Town Hall, for the public to pay their last respects.
