Police arrest 10 people in Vancouver who joined Extinction Rebellion protest

Protesters blocked a bridge in Amsterdam

Extinction Rebellion is calling on the Government to declare a climate and ecological emergency, to act immediately to halt wildlife loss and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.

On Tuesday (October 8), the Metropolitan Police imposed a condition upon the ongoing Extinction Rebellion demonstrations in central London.

The protest went ahead despite a city ban on activists gathering on the road. In London, police arrested at least 20 people Monday as protesters have vowed to close down Parliament and Trafalgar Square.

Extinction Rebellion said protesters from the XR Peace group were arrested as they blocked Victoria Embankment, outside the Ministry of Defence.

However, state Police Minister Mark Ryan said there was plenty of anecdotal evidence that protesters were "booby-trapping" devices with wire, metal and glass.

Earlier in London, police said some 135 climate activists were arrested.

On Monday, activists with the movement stopped traffic in European cities and smeared themselves and emblems of Wall Street in fake blood and lay in NY streets.

Demonstrators playing steel drums marched through central London as they kicked off two weeks of activities created to disrupt the city.

Roed said police spoke with protest coordinators around 9 p.m., and that the majority of them agreed to pack up. "We only get one planet and so we're here to try and defend it".

The rallies came as German Chancellor Angela Merkel defended climate protection measures her government is due to approve on Wednesday but which critics have condemned as unambitious. Hundreds were pulled away from the scene and 30 of them were charged.

The prime minister talked up New Zealand's track record on climate change action. "That's why I joined", said one demonstrator, who gave his name as Christiaan.

But engagement since then had stopped, he said, meaning police officers would be pulled off carjackings, robberies and road safety and "dragged into the CBD because of the unknown".

Protestors covered in fake blood are arrested by the NYPD around the Wall Street Bull during an Extinction Rebellion demonstration in NY on October 7,2019.

These Parisian activists have been occupying this central position, a few hundred metres from the Paris police prefecture, where a ceremony was organized on Tuesday in honour of the victims of last week's massacre, in the presence of Emmanuel Macron.

In April, the group held a large demonstration in London that brought major routes in the city to a standstill.
