Nobel Physics awarded to three scientists for work on cosmology

Gregg Semenza

"The pioneering work by Jim Peebles, Michel Mayor, and Didier Queloz has had far-reaching consequences in many areas".

Yesterday, Americans William G. Kaelin Jr. and Gregg L. Semenza and Britain's Peter J. Ratcliffe won the Nobel prize for Physiology or Medicine, for discovering details of how the body's cells sense and react to low oxygen levels, providing a foothold for developing new treatments for anemia, cancer and other diseases.

That can't quite be said for Peebles' theoretical work.

By using the science of precision, based on mathematical foundation and cosmology, he changed what we knew into what's now known as physical cosmology.

Currently, regular matter - the stuff that makes up the stars, the planets, and everything on Earth - is believed to comprise only 5% of the total mass and energy in the Universe.

"This is the dark energy", said Danielsson, as he poured the dark coffee into a glass mug.

After 12 seasons and 10 Emmys, CBS wrapped up The Bang Theory, airing its final 279th episode with an emotional finale, leaving a mark in the history of U.S. television.

Swedish TV4 asked, "It's been 14 billion years since our Universe was created".

Peebles responded, "This is only a guess, it is remarkable and ironic that we can be very sure there are many planets, and among them surely life would be suitable for life of some sort".

"We are studying the origins of life and that's exactly what exoplanets are doing", Queloz said.

"I was in a daze", he said, adding he had not been expecting the honor but had since celebrated with champagne. We will never, ever, see these other lives, these other planets.

"When the observations started catching up with the theory, I was at regular intervals startled at the great power in the advances in technology to test these ideas".

"You should enter science because you are fascinated by it ... that's what I did".

In October 1995, Mayor and Queloz announced the first discovery of a planet outside our solar system, an exoplanet, orbiting a solar-type star in the Milky Way.

Queloz used to be meeting with totally different lecturers attracted to discovering new planets when the press web page of job at Cambridge University urged him he had received the Nobel.

Whittingham said he is "overcome with gratitude" and has so many people to thank that he doesn't know where to begin.

By looking at these "Doppler shifts" using an observational method known as radial velocity, astronomers cannot only detect the presence of a planet, but also estimate its mass and orbital period (the length of the planet's "year").

They were able to locate planet 51 pegs b - which has a radius of 135,830km and is located approximately 50 light-years away.

Didier Queloz was jointly awarded the prize for his discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star.

Neil Turok, who worked with Peebles at Princeton and now serves as director of the Centre for the Universe at the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Ont., described his former colleague as an unsung hero, famous in the world of cosmology, but seldom recognized outside of it.
