Newlywed bride, siblings drown trying to take selfie

Four members of Indian family drown while trying to take selfie

India has the highest number of selfie deaths, followed by Russian Federation, the United States and Pakistan.

A newlywed woman and three family members were swept away and drowned while trying to take a selfie in a fast-flowing river in southern India. Authorities say the lifeless bodies were later recovered and autopsies will be carried out.

In Tamil Nadu on Sunday, the young married couple, from Bargur in Krishnagiri, were visiting relatives in Uthangarai along with the bridegroom's sister, The Hindu newspaper reported. "The water level increased while they were there".

"They wanted to take a selfie at this spot on the dam and they slipped", Prabhakar told CNN.

Last month, a woman reportedly fell 200 ft (60m) to her death while taking a snap of herself on a clifftop in western India. However, the four others had disappeared underwater.

Researchers warned that the 259 deaths revealed by the study's limited methods are likely to be only the tip of the iceberg.

He also noted that although the act of taking a selfie isn't unsafe, it becomes so when people take risks to get the flawless shot.

The study, published in The Journal of Family Medicine, also identified other top causes as falls from high places and being attacked posing with risky animals.

India has the highest number of recorded selfie deaths in the world.

"About three-fourth of selfie deaths occurred in males".

Some cities like Mumbai have started putting "no-selfie zone" signage up, as a warning to the country's 300 million smartphone users.

They found that the most selfie deaths occurred in India, followed by Russian Federation, the U.S. and Pakistan. Over 100 people had been injured and 10 killed in death-defying stunts gone wrong, including a woman wounded by a gunshot and two men who killed themselves blowing up grenades.
