Murray shines in Antwerp to reach first semifinal in two years

Andy Murray of Britain becomes emotional after defeating Marius Copil of Romania 6-7, 3-6 7-6, during the Citi Open tennis tournament in Washington Friday Aug. 3 2018

Andy Murray battled through to his first semi-final in nearly two and a half years at the European Open in Antwerp.

Murray underwent career-saving hip surgery in January following the Australian Open, returning to play doubles - winning the title at Queens before partnering up with Serena Williams at Wimbledon.

"I haven't played loads of matches the past few years, so when you get to the end of the match, it's always hard to serve it out", Murray said in a courtside interview.

He will face Adrian Mannarino, a 6-3 6-4 victor over Andreas Seppi.

"My wife has been a huge support for getting me back".

Three breaks of the booming Copil serve - with one drop of his own - saw Murray wrap up the first set in 44 minutes. However, failing to convert a match point didn't affect Murray, who broke Copil in the ninth game of the third set and then routinely served out for the match.

"It was actually my match with him at the French Open when my hip problems really started".

Andy Murray took a step closer to a first title in arguably the toughest year of his playing career, grinding out a 3-6 7-5 6-2 win over Ugo Humbert on Saturday to reach the final of the European Open in Antwerp.

"I feel OK just now, it's more how you pull up the following day", Murray in his on-court interview, per Sky Sports.

Me and Stan have played a lot against each other... it is nice that we are both able to be back playing against each other in a final. He served extremely well.

"If I went out there against one of those three [Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic] and lost 6-1, 6-1 and got killed, yeah, that is not necessarily productive".

"I feel OK and hopefully I'll pull up well tomorrow".
