Louisiana Ranks High on STD Report

Treponema pallidum the bacterium which causes syphilis

Needs for increased funding for sexually transmitted disease prevention efforts through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for investments in improved surveillance and for attention to ensure essential public health services are accessible, are clearly spelled out in the report.

In California, cases of congenital syphilis - the term used when a mother passes the infection to her baby during pregnancy - continued an acute seven-year climb, to 332 cases, a whopping 18.1% increase from 2017. Of the more than 115,000 syphilis cases in the USA last year, the CDC found that more than 1,300 of them involved newborns who were born with the disease - that is a massive 40-percent increase over the previous year.

More than 1.75 million cases of chlamydia were reported previous year, the most ever reported to the CDC, according to the report. Cases of syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia combined reached an all-time high in 2018. Five states - Texas, California, Florida, Arizona, and Louisiana - accounted for 70 percent of all congenital syphilis cases a year ago. The state had only a single reported case from 2013 through 2017.

When pregnant women with syphilis do not receive treatment, their babies might be born with congenital syphilis, resulting in stillbirths, preterm birth, and physical and mental disabilities, The Hill reports. The agency found a number of issues that contributed to these record numbers, including poverty, stigma preventing some people from getting help, drug use, unstable housing, local and state cuts to STD programs, and more.

STDs can cause a number of serious health problems. Over the years, gonorrhea has become resistant to almost every class of antibiotics used against it. Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) now stands as the only antibiotic to retain high effectiveness against gonorrhea in the United States, the CDC says.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the numbers Tuesday.
