Government will not participate in Brexit deal vote if Letwin amendment passes

France's President Emmanuel Macron addresses media representatives at a press conference during a European Union Summit at European Union Headquarters in Brussels

The source said: "If the prime minister wants to get Brexit done as soon as possible, why is he not doing everything in his power to move it along?" Much like his predecessor, Boris has grown used to rejection in Parliament, and with today's Letwin vote seen as a proxy for the meaningful vote on his Brexit deal, markets are understandably treating this result with disappointment.

The House of Commons has said that Prime Minister Boris Johnson is required by law to delay the Brexit vote.

Ronnie Campbell, Labour MP for Blyth in Northumberland, has already confirmed that he plans to back the divorce proposals and told Radio 4's World At One that as many as 11 others could join him.

Mina Andreeva, the spokesperson for the EU Commission, tweeted: "EU Commission takes note of the vote in the House of Commons today on the so-called Letwin Amendment meaning that the Withdrawal Agreement itself was not put to vote today".

On Thursday the EU Commission's president, Jean-Claude Juncker, speaking in Brussels to reporters, insisted the deal "has to" be approved by the MPs and "there will be no prolongation". She asked rhetorically, adding that delays in the withdrawal process provide "an opportunity to weaken the positions of European partners, to wear them out with the lack of understanding about perspectives and possibility of strategic planning".

If the deal is not ratified before October 31 and there is no extension a no-deal Brexit is expected to happen.

An amendment, which delays backing the agreement until the necessary legislation to implement it is in place, was passed with a majority of 16.

But MPs will debate a proposal that could delay Brexit again until all the necessary United Kingdom legislation is passed.

And ministers left Parliament saying they'd try again on Monday.
