Former TODAY show host Matt Lauer allegedly raped an NBC colleague at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, according to the new book Catch and Kill by investigative reporter Ronan Farrow. NBC said it fired Lauer on November 29, 2017, after a female staffer accused him of inappropriate sexual behavior, but did not identify her. According to Nevils's recollection, Lauer invited her to his hotel room when she was drunk, forcibly pushed her against the door and kissed her, before throwing her on his bed and asking if she liked anal sex.

And while Nevils said several people knew of her relationship with Lauer, she didn't disclose the full details or escalate the situation until she confided in Vieira - who immediately told her to take action, according to Farrow's excerpt.

Lauer claims that he and Nevils continued their extramarital affair once back in NY, noting that never did she "express in words or actions any discomfort" with the arrangement.

The Associated Press typically does not identify alleged victims of sexual assault, unless they step forward publicly as Nevils has done. She was urged to go to NBCUniversal human resources with a lawyer; Lauer was sacked soon thereafter. Variety reports it obtained an advanced copy of "Catch and Kill", scheduled to hit bookstores next week, identifying a woman accusing Lauer of anally raping her in a Russian Federation hotel room.

Farrow's forthcoming book primarily focuses on his investigation into disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and the hurdles his then-employer, NBC News, put in his way that caused him to publish the story in the New Yorker instead.

"I was [in L.A.] and my phone started going off at 4 a.m", she said. She claims that "she bled for days", Farrow writes. "She told her colleagues and superiors at NBC", and after she switched jobs, she "reported it to one of her new bosses there". As Farrow writes, Nevils "had no reason to suspect Lauer would be anything but friendly based on prior experience".

The then-TV page said she made a slew of phone calls and finally tracked it down. "It was nonconsensual in that I said, multiple times, that I didn't want to have anal sex". In addition, he slammed claims she had control over her career-saying she worked for Vieira, not him-during their affair.

NBC News Chairman Andy Lack, who is a key figure of the Variety report, also issued a statement that was read aloud. "It was completely transactional".

Overnight, Variety reported grisly new details of former TODAY show anchor Matt Lauer's horrific workplace behavior. He said the encounter was consensual. "I hope those people will understand that these allegations cross a serious line, and what they can share is a vital truth, even if it may seem unpopular".

Her account is sure to prompt new questions about whether she felt protected by NBC. That's why he was sacked within 24 hours of us first learning of the complaint. Vieira urged Nevils to "file a formal complaint report with NBC's office of human resources", which Farrow says she did. "Our hearts break again for our colleague", reads a statement by NBC News.

While HR are said to have promised Nevils anonymity, her story quickly got out in the company, and prompted her to go on medical leave in 2018.
