Chief Medical Officer wants food banned on public transport to fight obesity

And she said more must be done to stop youngsters being "dazzled by companies" offering junk food, saying children are "drowning in a flood of unhealthy food and drink options".

EATING on public transport should be banned to combat obesity, a top health adviser to the government has urged.

During his successful campaign to become the new Conservative leader in the summer, Boris Johnson promised to tackle the "continuing creep of the nanny state" should he become Prime Minister.

The 96-page-report outlines United Kingdom ambitions to have halved childhood obesity by 2030, despite England being "nowhere near" achieving it.

Katharine Jenner, at Action on Sugar, said Davies' "brave call for bold action is a beacon of hope" and that there was an urgent need to restrict promotions and marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages, which can only be achieved through legislation.

Professor Davies said many children who are overweight suffer from health issues including type 2 diabetes and depression, which affects their quality of life, education and life chances.

By making snacking on public transport a difficulty, we're reinforcing the (incorrect) presumption that weight, and well being, is one thing we will all management - that it's merely a matter of non-public accountability.

- Curb speed limits near schools and homes and encourage more children to walk, scoot or cycle.

The report is aimed at politicians and policy makers rather than parents and claims the government should prioritise children's health ahead of companies' profits.

NHS chief executive Simon Stevens said of the latest data: "Obesity is a risky public health threat for our children, leading to a string of serious illnesses".

Increasing portion sizes and the ready availability of junk food means children now, on average, consume three unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks a day, containing seven teaspoons of sugar.

"Cheap unhealthy food options now take centre stage in our lives and in our shops", wrote Dame Sally.

Her report says England was "nowhere near" meeting the government's target of halving childhood obesity by 2030.

Dame Sally said weight-loss programmes and treatment were all being undermined by environments that promote unhealthy food.

She acknowledged it modified into "crucial that kids are vaccinated", adding: "I take note looking out after two kids as they died from measles".

But Mr Hancock vowed to "act on the evidence", adding: 'Dame Sally has done more than anyone to promote the health of the nation over a decade as CMO'. "However, these same nurses have been fighting an uphill battle, on the one hand against corporations who have resisted reform and used advertising to manipulate childrens' diets, and on the other against sustained cuts to public health spending and a significant reduction in the numbers of school nurses and health visitors who perform vital early interventions with families and children".

"We agree more needs to be done to tackle obesity, and welcome the report's clear steer that everyone needs to play their part, including schools, local councils and the NHS".
