CEO and president of GM present at UAW negotiations

GM Chief Executive Mary Barra as back at the bargaining table with union leaders amid signs of potential progress in talks to end a strike

The United Auto Workers and General Motors have reached a tentative agreement for a new four-year contract. GM outraged union workers previous year by threatening four US plants with possible closure, though it's offered to keep at least one of those factories open.

The United Auto Workers union's top bargainer with General Motors says a tentative deal with the company will bring "major gains" to workers.

It could be hard to win rank-and-file approval for the deal, although strikers will probably want to return to work after missing four weeks of paychecks. Then workers will have to vote on it.

This year's talks - also occurring with Ford Motor Co F.N and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles FCHA.MI - have been overshadowed by a widening federal investigation into corruption at the union. "Additional details will be provided at the appropriate time".

"The UAW contract used to set the industrial standard for America", Gilley said.

The strike immediately brought GM's USA factories to a halt, and within a week, started to hamper production in Mexico and Canada.

"The feeling since the announcement is optimistic; not overly celebratory", said Darin Gilley, financial secretary for UAW Local 2250 in Wentzville.

The UAW workers went on strike against GM.

"We're not just going to take the first thing that they give us", worker Tina Black said in September from the picket line at an engine and transmission plant in Romulus, Michigan, near Detroit's main airport.

The automaker announced the plant's closing in November 2018, along with four others in the USA and Canada, in order to save the company $6 billion by the end of 2020. The Oshawa Assembly plant, slated for closure by the automaker, was hit hardest with 2,100 workers on furlough.

GM Executive Vice President for Global Manufacturing Gerald Johnson issued a statement Friday saying, "On Monday, we presented another offer we felt achieved our mutual objectives".

The deal is likely to include some pay raises, lump sum payments to workers, and requirements that GM build new vehicles in USA factories, the Associated Press reports. Union leaders from factories nationwide will travel to Detroit for a vote on Thursday. It happened on day 31 of the strike.

The General Motors logo at the company's world headquarters in Detroit, May 16, 2014. "They realize we're not just fighting for ourselves; we're fighting for the middle class". This is has been the longest major strike in the auto industry in more than 20 years.

If all of the committees bless the deal, it's likely to take several days for GM to get its factories restarted.

GM and the union have been negotiating at a time of troubling uncertainty for the USA auto industry. If they can sell their house, his wife can finally move south with him.

"I think there is pressure on both sides to get to a deal", he said. The strike ended with an agreement in which the UAW took over control of retirees' health care costs. The UAW called on GM to put a new product of its own in the plant. "This contract is going to show which side the UAW is on", Joe, a young worker at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant, told the WSWS Autoworker Newsletter. Driven up by the longest economic expansion in American history, auto sales appear to have peaked and are now heading in the other direction.

GM and other automakers are dealing with declining U.S. auto sales along with the need to spend billions to develop electric and self-driving vehicles which are seen by many as the future for the industry.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump's trade war with China and his tariffs on imported steel and aluminum have raised costs for auto companies. A revamped North American free trade deal is stalled in Congress, raising doubts about the future of America's trade in autos and auto parts with Canada and Mexico, which past year came to US$257 billion.
