Can’t quit Washington? Gowdy returns as Trump defender

Fox News Terminates Trey Gowdy

Former Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) has officially joined President Trump's outside legal defense team as the president gears up for an impeachment battle with the House.

White House counsel Pat Cipollone wrote in a letter to House Democratic leaders Monday that their inquiry has proceeded in a "manner that violates fundamental fairness and constitutionally mandated due process" and "lacks any legitimate constitutional foundation" or "pretense of fairness".

He retired in January at the conclusion of his final term and joined Fox News as a contributor.

Gowdy, a Republican, has been a frequent target of Trump's ire over his comments about Russia's meddling in the 2016 election, and his handling of a congressional investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the attack on Americans in Benghazi, Libya, in 2012. In 2012, he declared, "The notion that you can withhold information and documents from Congress no matter whether you are the party in power or not in power is wrong. Respect for the rule of law must mean something irrespective of the vicissitudes of political cycles!"

Gowdy chose to not run for re-election in 2018. "I have known Trey for years and worked with him when he served in Congress".

The Democratic-led House of Representatives began impeachment proceedings against Trump last month over his attempts to have Ukraine's president investigate Biden and his son Hunter Biden, who was on the board of a Ukrainian gas company. Gowdy said this was an intentional choice to create a wall between the White House and Congress, which was supposed to be investigating potential misconduct within the administration.

Trump tweeted in December 2015 after Gowdy endorsed one of his primary rivals, Sen.

"A lot of them have already made up their minds", he said in a September 27th Fox appearance during which he defended the July Trump-Ukraine phone call that eventually led to the impeachment inquiry.

"Rep. Gowdy's tenure in Congress made a mockery of Congressional oversight and his eagerness to use the deaths of courageous Americans overseas in service of his partisan, political goals is a dark and shameful chapter in the history of the House of Representatives", DCCC Deputy Communications Director Patrick Burgwinkle wrote.

"Trey's command of the law is well known and his service on Capitol Hill will be a great asset as a member of our team", Sekulow said.

Gowdy's time as a prosecutor and member of Congress "will serve this nation as we seek the facts", Scott said in a statement.
