The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power shut off power on the major transmission lines but rerouted them to avoid widespread outages. When it was first reported a few minutes before 11 p.m., it had gutted 60 acres before growing to 1,600 acres about an hour later.

Gov. Gavin Newsom criticized PG&E and ordinary customers complained about the inconveniences caused by the unprecedented blackouts that began midweek, with many wondering: Did the utility go too far in its attempt to ward off more deadly fires?

Wildfires from the Saddleridge Fire in northern California are seen from the air, October 10 2019. The LAFD said an estimated 12,700 homes were under mandatory evacuation.

With roadways blocked, some residents fled their homes on foot at 3 a.m.

Earlier Friday, LAFD tweeted that some evacuation centers like one at Granada Hills Recreation Center were full, but it added that others were opening up. The power was left on in one San Jose neighborhood until high winds knocked down a line sparking a small fire.

Another blaze - the Sandalwood Fire in Calimesa - is approximately 500 acres and 10% contained, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Residents are under mandatory evacuation orders, and 120 firefighters are assigned to the area.

The Saddleridge fire comes almost one year after the devastating Woolsey Fire, which broke out in Malibu on November 8 and burned through 96,949 acres before it was contained on November 22.

At least nine fires are burning in the Golden State Friday morning, including five in Southern California, fueled by gusty winds blowing through the region.

The agency adds, "Wind gusts between 45 and 55 miles per hour are expected across coastal and valley areas, with gusts between 55 and 75 miles per hour in the foothills and mountains".

The National Weather Service said a wind advisory and a red flag warning are in effect.

"When you're told to leave, we mean for you to leave", Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said early Friday.
