3 win Nobel Prize in Physics for work to understand cosmos

Brit and Americans share Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

Typically when this happens, the two discoveries are at least somewhat related; that doesn't seem to be the case here, as the Prize Committee has recognized James Peebles for his contributions to theoretical cosmology and Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz for the first clear discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a main sequence star.

The 2019 prize, awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Science, rewards "new realizing of the universe's construction and ancient previous, and the first discovery of a planet orbiting a photograph voltaic-form superstar exterior our photograph voltaic system".

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said the scientists' research had "transformed our ideas about the cosmos".

A Princeton University alumnus and professor emeritus whose research helped us better understand the history of the universe has been awarded a share of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Using theoretical tools and calculations, Peebles was able to interpret trace radiation from the infancy of the universe and so discover new physical processes, the academy said. By now astronomers have found thousands of exoplanets -quite a change from the one solar system we knew about just quarter of a century ago. "I suppose the aura of the Nobel is such that my life will change, but I don't think I'm going to let it change much".

Kaelin meanwhile told reporters it was a moment he had dreamt of for a long time.

Peebles was awarded half the prize while Mayor and Queloz shared the other half.

James Peebles, an emeritus professor at Princeton University. "It's enormous. It's beyond usual emotions".

Mayor and Didier found the planet by observing what Danielsson called an anonymous star in the constellation Pegasus.

"This year's laureates have contributed to answering fundamental questions about our existence", he said.

While these "dark" components remain mostly elusive, the pioneering work of U.S. astronomer Vera Rubin proved nearly beyond doubt that dark matter exists.

"If there are a hundred billion planetary systems, with maybe 10 billion planetary systems with Earth-like planets, it would be highly unlikely and against all physical theories to assume that life only developed on our planet", he added.

This year's Nobel Prize is worth 9 million kronor ($918,000). The last Nobel Prize awarded to a Penn affiliate was in 2011, when former professor Thomas Sargent was awarded the prize in economics.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be handed out in Oslo, Norway, on the same day.

After Marie Curie in 1903 and German-American scientist Maria Goeppert-Mayer in 1963, Strickland became just the third woman to be awarded the Physics Prize since 1901.

Today's Nobel Prize in physics was evenly split between two discoveries and, thus, unevenly split among the three honored.

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to William G. Kaelin Jr., Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza for their work uncovering how cells sense and adapt to different oxygen levels. Today I am at the Nobel Forum at the Karolinska Institute in Solna just north of Stockholm, where this year's victor or winners of the Medicine Prize will be announced in 20 minutes.
