2 new vaping-related deaths reported in Indiana

CDC reports 26 deaths more than 1,200 cases of lung injury connected to vaping e-cigarettes

Michigan's vaping-related lung injury cases have all been in the lower peninsula and have been to people ranging from 16 to 67 years old.

A majority of the victims, 70%, have been male, and 80% have been under the age of 35. 32% said they exclusively used THC-containing products.

Only 13% said they had exclusively used nicotine-containing products with no THC.

For more information, visit the ISDH's vaping illness information page or the CDC's vaping-related illness page. This outbreak may have more than one cause, many different substances and product sources are still under investigation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on October 10 that deaths have been confirmed in 21 states.

But authorities can not definitively exclude nicotine products, since 13 percent of all patients reported nicotine use only. "We need to understand these accounts better".

For now, investigators suspect that some portion of the cases are due to a risky practice linked to the preparation of THC, but can not say for certain whether other cases have other causes innate to the vaping process. Together with colleagues in the United States, we are all doing our part to find out what is causing these illnesses.

The CDC says people should consider refraining from vaping, especially with products including THC.

Eighty percent of the 26 individuals who were interviewed reported vaping with THC-containing products.

NY state, MI and Rhode Island have all banned the sale of flavored vaping products.

The Canadian medical officers of health said flavourings have not necessarily been tested for safety when inhaled.

They called for measures including restrictions on the accessibility and availability of vaping products, reducing the appeal of products to youth, including plain packaging, health warnings and regulating the sale and marketing of vaping products and flavourings, and putting in place school and community policies to reduce use.
