Xenophobic attacks: Nigeria begins voluntary withdrawal of citizens

I'm not worried; Xenophobia or not people will always go to South Africa – SA High Commissioner to Ghana

SERAP had in its letter to Ms Maiga last Friday stated that "these xenophobic attacks constitute serious violations of the human rights of Nigerians and other African citizens in South Africa".

Managing executive for Vodacom Business, Rudi Matjokana, cautioned South Africans on the effect the unrest had on investments in the country, saying the violent attacks deterred unity among African state.

"The leaders of South Africa-based Nigerians will collaborate to promote a citizens diplomacy programme to foster stronger personal and business relationships between Nigerians and South Africans".

The Sun said that a fresh round of violence is reportedly building up in the streets of Johannesburg, South Africa, as armed protesters are out again, demanding that foreigners should leave the country.

Nonetheless, a diplomatic row ensued with Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari sending an envoy to South Africa to "express Nigeria's displeasure over the treatment of her citizens".

This resulted in a backlash as demonstrators in other countries ransacked stores operated by Shoprite, the telecoms giant MTN and other South African firms, denouncing the xenophobia in South Africa.

The Consul General, after spending a couple of days liaising with the South African government, returned to Nigeria this past weekend.

The anti-foreigner violence marred the lead-up to a World Economic Forum event on Africa last week.

Cele said police had a plan of action which he could not disclose and urged the media to stop spreading the narrative that the Nigerian President would be coming to the country because this was a crisis.

Nigeria last week summoned the South African ambassador to condemn the violence while sending an envoy to meet President Cyril Ramaphosa.

"We received reports of police standing by idly in Pretoria while shops were looted and people attacked", he said.

Instead, the High Commissioner believed "We must come together, put our heads together and say what it is that needs to be done for all our countries" because, in her view, "We don't come to a country and take over". There is an estimated 3.6 million migrants out of South Africa's 50 million population, according to BBC news.

The announcement came days after the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, had a similar meeting with the committee.

Foreign nationals are often accused of being criminals and drug dealers, and of undercutting South Africans for work, burdening limited social services and wooing South African women.

"They are killing other nationals as well; I think it is lack of knowledge, because they are not well educated about Nigeria's in securing their freedom".
