Whither Brexit? Scenarios For UK Political Crisis

British PM faces Brexit rebellion, threatens election

Johnson took office after his predecessor, Theresa May, was forced out over her failure to get her Brexit divorce deal through Parliament.

Should this happen, Johnson said he would call an election as early as October, a senior government source told Business Insider.

The next election is not officially scheduled until 2022 and under the Fixed Term Parliament Act, Johnson would need a two-thirds majority in the lower house to bring Britain back to the polls - meaning he would need Labour support.

'Of course if Boris Johnson says we're leaving, we're going to have a clean break. then we, the Brexit Party, would put country before party and tell Mr Johnson that we want to help you in any way we can, ' he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

More than three years after the United Kingdom voted in a referendum to leave the European Union, the outcome of the Brexit crisis remains uncertain, with possible outcomes ranging from a turbulent no-deal exit to abandoning the whole endeavour.

The EU on Tuesday said a Brexit without a deal is a "very distinct" possibility and everyone has to be prepared for that.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he will call for a new general election. Parliament returned to session for the first time since the prime minister moved to suspend the lawmaking body, beginning around September 9 and leaving it in recess until October 14 - or for more than half the weeks remaining before Johnson's deadline.

Johnson's opponents are putting forward a bill that would force him to delay Brexit until January 31.

It also spilled out onto the streets outside parliament, where anti-Brexit protesters gathered.

"The prime minister has lost his majority with the honorable member from Bracknell joining the Liberal Democrats", she said on the chamber floor, adding: "When will the prime minister stop playing with people's lives and stop Brexit?"

Johnson has indicated he would go to a general election rather than risk a "no deal" Brexit.

"Enough is enough", Johnson said.

Johnson's government will now seek to hold a vote on Wednesday to approve an early election, most likely to be held on October 14.

Johnson cast the challenge as an attempt to force Britain to surrender to the European Union just as he hopes to secure concessions on the terms of the divorce - a step he said he would never accept. It was trading as low as 1.1965 against the USA dollar in early morning, marking its lowest level since a flash crash in October 2016 when the currency briefly fell sharply to 1.15 against the US dollar before rapidly rebounding.

His decision to suspend Parliament for over a month starting next week so that MPs do not try to hinder his progress has stirred outrage and is being challenged in three separate courts.

Johnson insists his threat to leave the European Union without a deal will ultimately force the bloc to sign up to new terms to ease the end of Britain's 46-year membership of the bloc.
