Whaley Joins Congressional Democrats In Push For Expanded Background Checks

Schumer Slams McConnell For Blocking Gun Control

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Monday sent a letter to President Trump urging him to support gun background check legislation that has already been passed by the House.

"I'm hoping that really happens", said Schachter.

Civics simplified: House or Senate members draft a bill. Pelosi explained that the gun control bill was named H.R. 8 "because it was eight years from the time Gabby Giffords' town meeting was assaulted".

Against this backdrop, McConnell outlined what he must see before considering any guns legislation: "If the president is in favor of a number of things that he has discussed openly and publicly, and I know that if we pass it it'll become law, I'll put it on the floor".

Trump has not yet made clear what legislation he would support. The Senate leader is trying to avoid a politically uncomfortable situation of Republicans joining Democrats to pass bills, only to have Trump reject them.

"Background checks are the base from which we must do anything", Schumer said on Monday. A letter signed by 278 mayors from both parties urges Congress to act on the House-passed bill.

"The NRA exists to spread disinformation and knowingly puts weapons into the hands of those who harm and terrorize us by blocking commonsense gun violence prevention legislation and by advocating for risky legislation like "stand your ground" laws, permit-less carries and guns in schools".

Bryan Barnett, the mayor of Rochester Hills, Mich., and president of the mayors' conference, said he is optimistic Congress will act. He said the White House team talked about "a suite of solutions" and that background checks "are certainly on the table". "It's not something that curtails their ability to own and operate a gun freely".

More of those polled said they trust Democrats over President Trump when it comes to handling gun laws, 51% to 36%, with independents siding with Democrats by a 17-point margin.

Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) expressed some frustration on Sunday over President Donald Trump's vagueness regarding plans to address gun violence. We're dealing with Republicans. "You are uniquely positioned to answer their call", the duo wrote.

Republicans, some Democrats and the gun lobby have fought off such attempts as a violation of the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment providing the right to bear arms.

Pelosi and Schumer joined forces on a letter to President Trump earlier Monday, imploring him to exert sway over Republicans and give "political cover" in defiance of the National Rifle Association. McConnell declined, saying he first needed approval from President Donald Trump. "They can't escape that responsibility". Despite a flurry of subpoenas to top White House officials and former campaign aides the Democrats' efforts to obtain documents have been largely stonewalled and few witnesses have agreed to appear.

"The president has had his staff. sort through all sorts of ideas for him", he said in an interview on September 6, adding that Trump has been talking "directly" to lawmakers.

Senators from both parties have been meeting privately and with the White House on possible areas of agreement. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who has a bipartisan background checks bill with Republican Sen.

"[President] Trump has changed his mind on strengthening background checks after talking to the NRA". "Still, Toomey said", It's hard to say how this will turn out".

A string of mass shootings in Texas, Ohio and Virginia during the August recess renewed the drawn-out battle over gun control. Escobar, who was in El Paso during the August recess, said she heard the same question over and over from city residents: "Why haven't we done something to stop this?"
