U.S. House panel poised to spell out Trump impeachment probe

The Judiciary panel and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee announced Friday that they are demanding information about the spending of taxpayer money at the president's hotels and properties, partly to inform the impeachment investigation.

The Judiciary Committee has appealed to a federal judge seeking to the underlying evidence and grand jury information that informed former special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's report.

The letters come after Pence stayed at Trump's resort in Doonbeg, Ireland, this week.

"The Committee does not believe that U.S. taxpayer funds should be used to personally enrich President Trump, his family, and his companies", Cummings wrote, saying the stay could be a potential conflict of interest and violate the U.S. Constitution.

It is doubtful, however, that the probe will lead to any charges against the president.

"We have been focused on the Mueller report, and that is a very small part of the overall picture", said Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, a member of the Judiciary panel.

Plus, some Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee are urging the panel not to focus heavily on the hush money, anxious a skeptical public would compare that to the GOP push to tarnish President Bill Clinton's reputation amid his affair with a White House intern.

Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Jerrold Nadler listens to testimony during a hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington March 26, 2019.

The House Judiciary Committee is escalating its impeachment investigation into President Donald Trump, preparing a vote as soon as next Wednesday to establish procedures for hearings the panel hopes to hold this fall. "We must get America focused on the ongoing violations against basic constitutional principles". "I think a lot of people would rather just vote him out, vote the president out". More subpoenas are likely. "While White House officials have repeatedly claimed it is easier for Secret Service and law enforcement to secure the President's resorts when he and the Vice President travel, there has been no confirmation by law enforcement or the Secret Service to support the practice of spending taxpayer dollars on the President's businesses".

In addition to looking at Trump's use of his properties, two House committees are continuing to investigate his relationship with banks with which he did business.

The White House declined to comment on the chairmen's letters.

Schiff said he thinks people's views are "pretty well dug in" on the Russian Federation investigation. "But we always knew his scope was limited ... and so there are other areas of abuse of power".

Since he clinched the presidency in 2016, Trump has not divested from his private business interests, rejecting the advice of government ethics experts.

Both Democrats have given a September 19 date for documents to be turned over. Letters requesting documents were also sent to the Secret Service, the vice president's office and the Trump Organization.
