Trump doesn't think he's ‘even heard of a Category 5' hurricane

Tropical Weather

It made landfall on the northwest section of the archipelago earlier on Sunday and its "fury" was now bearing on the Grand Bahama island, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

The ever-shifting storm was scheduled to plow through Florida but has shifted course to veer over the Bahamas.

The northwestern Bahamas is under a hurricane warning, which means "preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion", the hurricane center said.

Forecasters expect tropical storm-force winds to increase to hurricane force Monday afternoon through Tuesday.

Where will Dorian go next?

President Donald Trump said Sunday that he's "not sure that (he's) ever even heard of a Category 5" hurricane, despite four such storms having threatened the United States since he took office. Some of the possible forecast scenarios include Dorian tracking towards the coast of Florida or a track farther to the north, which would further impact Georgia and the Carolinas.

"The storm, which is moving in a westerly direction with sustained winds of 180 miles an hour, is a unsafe category five hurricane, carrying the strongest winds in recorded history for the northwestern Bahamas", NASA said.

Still, a major hurricane hovering just off the coast could cause serious damage. It was the strongest storm to make landfall in the USA in 26 years and only the fourth hurricane of this category to have hit the country.

In 2016, Hurricane Matthew veered away from Florida without a landfall but still left massive destruction in Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina from torrential rains. The worldwide hurricane database goes back continuously only to 1983.

A few hours later, Georgia's governor, Brian Kemp, ordered mandatory evacuations for that state's Atlantic coast, also starting at midday Monday.

DeSantis's office said 4,434 Florida National Guard soldiers and airmen are supporting the state's efforts in various capacities, including 2,272 guardsmen authorized for state active duty. Caitlin Brown said. She added that eight military helicopters are on standby.

Despite increasing agreement in the forecast models that Dorian will turn north before making landfall in Florida this week, the predicted track still brings the "extremely dangerous" hurricane frighteningly close to the coast before it makes that turn.

Storm-surge watches are issued when "there is a possibility of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, in the indicated locations during the next 48 hours", the center said.

Its pressure, which bottomed out at 910 millibars, is significantly lower than Hurricane Andrew's when it made landfall in south Florida in 1992 (the lower the pressure, the stronger the storm), and data taken by Hurricane Hunter aircraft flying inside the storm show that Dorian may still be intensifying.

The national space agency released moving images from outer space showing the path of a unsafe weather system bound for Florida on September 1. He suspended tolls on major evacuation routes for affected counties, including along the Florida Turnpike.

In October 2017, Trump claimed "nobody has ever heard of a (Category) 5 hitting land", and earlier this year, he again said he had never heard of a hurricane of that intensity. "It's a self-contained city".

"I'd rather her ride it out in luxury over at the BoardWalk", he said, referring to the Disney resort.
