Tom Watson to break Labour's uneasy truce over Brexit

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson had a hard week after he lost his first vote, and members of the Parliament (MPs), including people from his own Conservative Party voted in favor of a new bill to prevent a no-deal Brexit. Mr Austin said: "This is the most hard decision I've ever had to take, but the truth is I'm ashamed of the Labour party".

"Boris Johnson has already conceded that the Brexit crisis can only be solved by the British people", the deputy leader will say.

The party's deputy chief will say an election on the one challenge of the European Union might not split the deadlock in Parliament.

"We were very, very clear that if people wanted a democratic moment, if they wanted an election, we offered it to the Labour opposition and mysteriously they decided not to go for it".

It is common that the approval of a new law takes several weeks and sometimes even months to pass or be denied, but this time MPs were fighting against the clock, since on August 28th - a week before the Parliament returned to activities - Johnson had requested to suspend, or prorogue, the Parliament from mid-semester to October 14th.

He claimed Johnson's government is not serious about trying to get a Brexit deal with the EU.

BBC Newsnight political editor Nick Watt said he believed Mr Corbyn's aim was to "provide a home" for both Leave and Remain supporters at the next election but he could be forced to allow colleagues to campaign on both sides in the event of another referendum.

"But shall I tell you who we're listening to?"

Speaking at Somerset House in central London, Mr Watson will say: 'The only way to break the Brexit deadlock once and for all is a public vote in a referendum.

While stopping short of calling for that himself, Mr Watson will say it is not too late for Labour to "win back" Remain voters from the Lib Dems if it campaigns "unequivocally" to remain. "Meanwhile this government will press on with negotiating a deal", Johnson said.

Watson's intervention is likely to be viewed as less than helpful by the Labour leadership. "Many on the left of the party are suggesting that he wants to avoid an election at all costs out of fear that Jeremy may become prime minister".

But they hope that once a general election campaign kicks off, focus will switch to Corbyn's radical policies, including the increase in workers' rights he outlined in Brighton on Tuesday.

The reason this matters is that those senior members of the shadow cabinet, such as Keir Starmer, Emily Thornberry, John McDonnell and Tom Watson, who want Labour to adopt an unambiguous remain position have been defeated.

The inspirational policies Corbyn reminded us of at TUC will not be delivered by a parliamentary party half in hock to the very vested interests Labour plans to confront.

These included continued customs union membership until the question of whether to leave could be settled at a general election; and closer alignment with the EU on workers' rights and environmental standards.
