There are a lot of post-secondary institutions across Canada, but only one Canadian university cracked the top 20 of a ranking of universities.

The new 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings show Brunel has raised to sit comfortably within the 351 - 400 global rankings bracket.

"It is encouraging to see UCT demonstrate such excellence in worldwide rankings", said UCT Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, "particularly given the incredibly competitive, global arena we operate in and the enormous challenges we face in terms of declining national funding and the imperative to transform our institution".

The six Indian universities that featured in the top 500 list includes Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur.

A total of 56 Indian institutes are among thousand world-class universities this year, up from 49 last year.

There are a total of five categories that schools are scored on which are teaching, research, citations, industry income, and global outlook.

In the top 20, most schools are located in either the US or the UK.

But, there has been an increase in the number of universities being represented in the list this year.

The THE World University Rankings, published once a year, assess nearly 1 400 institutions worldwide.

"We are honored to be recognized for the growing impact of the outstanding teaching and discovery taking place at the University of Washington", UW President Ana Mari Cauce said.

This year Swinburne has improved its position in a number of globally recognised rankings. "It now needs to back up these aspirations with high levels of investment - or risk declining further amid increasing global competition, especially from other parts of Asia", Ellie Bothwell, Times Higher Education rankings editor, was quoted as saying in the release.

"Having said that, I do not underestimate the efforts by University of Auckland academic staff, and the support provided by their professional colleagues, that go into achieving these rankings" he said.

Montreal's Mayor, Valérie Plante, took to Twitter earlier today to congratulate McGill and Université de Montréal for making the Top 100 in the THE rankings.
