Tesla Safety Under Fire As Video Shows Driver Asleep While On Autopilot

Tesla autopilot asleep

In response to the video and incident, a Tesla spokesperson told Fox News, "Many of these videos appear to be risky pranks or hoaxes".

A MA man has posted a video online that appears to show the driver of a Tesla sleeping as the auto speeds along a highway.

However, in California for example, while there is not a particular law about sleeping while in the driver's seat of an autonomous vehicle, police have powers to ensure drivers are not threatening the safety of themselves and others.

The clip from Massachusetts Turnpike in Newton, filmed and shared by Twitter user Dakota Randall, shows the driver with their head lolled forward while their passenger also appears to sleep beside them. "Teslas are sick, I guess?" he tweeted.

Speaking to WHDH, Randall said he drove alongside the auto for almost a minute and beeped the horn, but the driver didn't wake up.

He tried honking to wake up the driver, but said that it "didn't work at all". "I was like "that can't be right", so I did a double take, looked over and sure enough this guy was completely asleep".

According to The Guardian, state police said they are aware of the video. "Our driver-monitoring system repeatedly reminds drivers to remain engaged and prohibits the use of Autopilot when warnings are ignored. At highway speeds, drivers typically receive warnings every 30 seconds or less if their hands aren't detected on the wheel", the Tesla spokesperson said. "Maybe the people in the auto were faking being asleep, but I'm skeptical". In August, another video circulated of a driver who appeared to be dozing off on the I-5 near Santa Clarita, local station KABC-TV reported.
