Strong Winds Fuel Bushfires Along Australia’s Drought-Ridden East Coast

A bushfire burning at night

Firefighters battled strong winds and fast-moving blazes as they worked to contain out-of-control bushfires that have destroyed at least 21 homes across two states on the country's east coast.

EXHAUSTED Granite Belt residents were pinning their hopes on a desperate overnight push last night to defeat the fire that has menaced them for days.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advised Noosa residents of a bushfire burning near Eenie Creek Rd, Links Dr and Noosa Springs Dr.

On Monday the Gold Coast hinterland fire was burning on both sides of Binna Burra Rd, south of Summerville Rd.

"Very remote, really hard conditions for our firefighters, many of those areas and a lot of those assets, we just can not get to".

"I think we are through the worst of it, but we still have a couple of days to go before it really starts to cool down", he said.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services predictive services inspector Andrew Sturgess said the state had never before seen such serious bushfire conditions, so early in spring.

"As a rural firey myself, to see them standing against a wall of floating fire as embers came at them constantly on the wind, they did an fantastic job", he said.

They were told to evacuate or follow their bushfire plan on Monday afternoon because a fast and unsafe fire was heading their way.

Whereas Performing Queensland Premier, Jackie Trad, stated the extreme situations could possibly be attributed to local weather change.

Commissioner Mike Wassing said there was still a lot of work to be done on the Stanthorpe/Applethorpe fire but it was not likely to threaten any further homes.

"Very high fire dangers are expected through southern and south-eastern Queensland affecting the major fires of concern for today", he said.

Whereas the historic Binna Burra Lodge was burnt to an ember over the weekend as flames destroyed Lamington nationwide park, the adjoining Springbrook nationwide park - the place the movie star present is filmed - remained protected.

There were 83 fires burning in the state on Monday afternoon with hundreds of fire fighters were battling huge blazes that have gutted at least 20 homes since Thursday.

Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen told media that "this fire has continued to show a mind of its own and early this morning it crept into the Binna Burra Resort and there has been significant structural loss".

"So it's making firefighting in that area very, very hard".

"We've had some rain that's created a fuel load there, that has exacerbated the problem there coupled with circumstances on Friday and Saturday that were beyond belief", he told Radio National on Monday.

State Disaster Coordinator Steve Gollschewski said police would be "relentless" in their search for the offender.
