Starc-studded Australia bat at Old Trafford after winning toss

Highlights from the fourth day of the fourth Ashes Test between England and Australia at Old Trafford

Rain caused a frustrating delay of over two hours after lunch but plans to extend play were abandoned after rain came in again during the break for tea and only 44 overs were bowled on the opening day.

By that stage Australia had passed 400, a sixth-wicket stand of 145 between Smith and Tim Paine (58) grinding down the England bowlers for much of the afternoon, and they eventually declared on 497-8 after a ninth-wicket stand of 59 between Mitchell Starc (54no) and Nathan Lyon (26no).

The former captain missed England's dramatic one-wicket win in the third Test at Headingley after being felled by a bouncer from paceman Jofra Archer in the drawn second match of the series at Lord's.

Smith and Marnus Labuschagne put on 116 for the third wicket before the latter was bowled by a lovely delivery from Craig Overton for 67. With the bowling attack appearing increasingly tired, the runs flowed and when Stokes (0-66) left the field with a sore shoulder without completing his 11th over, they were briefly a man down too.

Having already extended his Ashes record of eight successive fifties, he hoisted his 26th Test century in 160 balls, including 11 fours, with a whipped two through square leg off Craig Overton. He managed to take only nine wickets in six innings.

It was the fifth time Broad had snared Warner this series.

Australia slipped to 28-2 when Broad rapped the pads of Marcus Harris and, after some consideration, umpire Kumar Dharmasena raised his finger and his verdict was upheld by video review.

But, even so, he has now scored 589 runs in four innings this series - his first since completing a 12-month ball-tampering ban, including three hundreds, at a colossal average of 147.25.

Smith reached his fifty with a seventh four in 81 balls when he ended up on his knees following an extravagant cover-drive off Ben Stokes, whose unbeaten 135 had seen England to an improbable victory at Headingley.

The 25-year-old Somerset seamer, who marked his full debut at Adelaide in December 2017 by bowling Smith, added: "A frustrating day for us, conditions didn't really suit running into bowl but we stuck at it pretty well".
