Scottish minister denies link between Prestwick Airport and Trump Turnberry

U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings

The airport is near the USA leader's Turnberry Resort and Air Force crews appear to have stayed there several times, including earlier this year on a stopover to Kuwait.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Air Force is reviewing how crews on worldwide travel choose airports and hotels after one crew recently spent a night at a Trump resort in Scotland.

The decision came after Congress began an ethics investigation into the use of the Trump resort for air-crew accommodations while military planes were being refueled at Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

The House oversight committee, which in June requested documents from the secretary of defense, said in a letter that "given the president's continued financial stake in his Scotland golf courses", there are questions about "the president's potential receipt of U.S. or foreign government emoluments in violation of the U.S. Constitution and. other serious conflict of interest concerns".

"I know nothing about an Air Force plane landing at an airport (which I do not own and have nothing to do with) near Turnberry Resort (which I do own) in Scotland, and filling up with fuel, with the crew staying overnight at Turnberry (they have good taste!)", Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter.

The inquiry is part of a broader, previously unreported probe into USA military expenditures at and around the Trump property in Scotland.

Vice President Pence was criticized last week for staying at a Trump golf resort on the western coast of Ireland instead of in Dublin, where he had meetings.

The US Air Force (USAF) has ordered a review of its guidance on overnight accommodation for flight crews.

The deal with the US Defence Logistics Agency (DLA), which manages the global supply chain for the US Army, Air Force, and Navy, is by far the airport's single biggest revenue stream.

"I've always felt this is the heart of it", Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin, a member of the Oversight and Judiciary committees, told CNN of Trump's business dealings on Monday.

There is no commercial relationship between the Scottish Government-owned Prestwick Airport and the Trump Turnberry resort owned by the USA president, Scotland's Transport Secretary has told MSPs. The [DOD] also claimed that it has "increasingly leveraged Prestwick as a stopover location" and stated that in the first eight months of this year, [DOD] aircraft made 259 stops-220 of which were required overnight crew stays.

But Pence's staff changed its explanation after Politico reported that many veterans of the Secret Service protective detail said the logistical issues were irrelevant and offered that they were staying at the club because it was close to the vice president's ancestral home.

President Donald Trump on Monday denied anything improper in the use by military personnel and Vice President Mike Pence of his luxury golf resorts while on official travel overseas.

Prior to posting about the resort stories, Trump once again blasted away at the media for its one-sided coverage of his presidency.

The New York Times reported that as Mr. Trump began his eventually successful bid for the White House, the "Pentagon made a decision to ramp up its use of that same airport to refuel Air Force flights and gave the local airport authority the job of helping to find accommodations for flight crews who had to remain overnight".

Congressional investigators have threatened to subpoena the Trump Administration over documents related to military lodging at the Turnberry golf resort in Scotland.

Trump has also defended his suggestion of hosting word leaders at his Miami resort, noting, "it's very importantly only five minutes from the airport". People are traveling, it's just like any other hotel.
