"Sadly, just like many other cities, so many people in this community are affected by suicide".

"The high toxicity of many pesticides means that such suicide attempts often lead to death, particularly in situations where there is no antidote or where there are no medical facilities nearby", the release read further.

According to the World Health Organization, while the majority of suicides happen in low and middle-income countries at 79%, the rate of suicide is actually highest in high-income countries that experience, on average, 11.5 suicides per 100 000 people.

Almost 3000 people on average commit suicide daily, according to WHO.

Rates varied widely, however, between countries, from 5 suicide deaths per 100 000, to more than 30 per 100 000.

After Guyana, Russia registered the world's second-highest rate, with 26.5 suicides per 100,000 people.

The report finds the highest number of suicides - 79 percent - are in low-and medium-income countries, while suicide rates are highest in the richer countries. Among teenagers aged 15-19 years, suicide was the second leading cause of death among girls (after maternal conditions) and the third leading cause of death in boys (after road injury and interpersonal violence).

"Every life matters and no death by suicide should be regarded as either acceptable or inevitable".

He added that everyone can make a contribution in preventing suicide and believes that it is by joining together, those suffering can be better supported.

Through its systemic advocacy grounded in insights from its own work supporting children, families and whānau, and informed by what it hears from children and young people themselves, Barnardos has been advocating for a new national suicide prevention strategy over the past few years, including to the previous government and as part of the current government's Inquiry into Mental Health and Addictions.
